So I’ve been thinking about the reason for writing a blog. I started it quite impulsively as you’ll see from my first post. I guess every blogger’s raison d’ĂȘtre is to be read, their drive to constantly increase readership. The day I opened shop I had zero readers. Next day I had two. The day after that I had three. I wouldn’t call the figures overwhelming but it’s a steady progression and enough to keep going on.
Some thoughts on blogging:
- It’s relaxing writing to a general, unspecific audience. It’s liberating not to have to flex too much muscle over structure. For example, writing theatre reviews for Fest or fluffy film previews for EIFF I’d feel compelled to try and paint a big picture. My first sentence would sound something like: “When XXX stumbled into the world of theatre in 19XX, little could he have forseen that X years later here he would be robbing the spotlight from etc etc…” I feel I have to tell it like a recognisable story, tell it like a preacher. I’d blog a review and wouldn’t feel like I’d owe anything to anyone, I’d tell it as it is, as seem by me and me alone.
- I’m not sure that it really matters at this stage whether there are many readers or not. I think it’s useful just to have a repository for my thoughts. And the simple thought that it could get read is encouragement enough. We all have good ideas from time to time, right, and we tell ourselves to take note of it but never end up doing so. Well, I don’t think I have the discipline and the right kind of lifestyle at the moment to diligently keep up a notebook or diary, but blogging is different, it involves the possibility of you guys nodding or shaking your heads. In a way it doesn’t matter if I don’t know who you are as long as I can feel that you are out there in your mysterious homes. So there we have it, I’m sharing my thoughts but also bookmarking them for later.
- I think it will keep me moving forward in life. It will encourage me to adventure if only so I can blog my discoveries. It’s my pacemaker.
Anyway I wonderfully digressed. What I wanted to say was, come and contribute to my blog, friends and strangers. Come and speak your mind for posterity. Where else are you going to do it?

Hi there brackets, thanks for your interest- I’m pleased people I don’t know are somehow arriving at my blog. How did you get here?!
I’d be most honoured if you’d write something. I’m not sure what it could be yet but will post you back when I have an idea. Maybe the reason why you blog. Or maybe you could tell us the meaning of ‘little green book.’ What do you know that nobody else knows..?

something new to read I look on
the tag surfer, which can be found
in the drop-down menu on the top
